Malthios regains freedom and begins life in Leafel
The Reincarnated Demon King's Host Just Wants to Live in Peace, But the Hero Won't Leave Him AloneMalthios regains freedom and begins life in Leafel is the event in which the former Demon King moves from judgment and confinement into an uncertain, shared future with Theo in Leafel. Its decisive significance lies in the contrast between Malthios's past as the enemy around whom kingdoms organized their defenses and his first tentative attempt to become a neighbor: he leaves the healer's cottage, flies without restriction, lands in town with his demonic body visible, and is invited inside rather than driven away.
Causes and Background
Malthios's freedom follows the trial of the Demon King's host, a public proceeding that exposes Theo as the host of the reincarnated Malthios. The case is conducted through the political machinery of Algeya: the capital's throne room is surrounded by court members and mirror spells that allow rulers and communities across the country to witness the hearing. Theo is brought before the throne in restraints and initially faces the judgment of a court that declares him guilty for protecting Malthios. The arrangement places both souls under the authority of institutions that treat Malthios's existence as a continuing danger rather than as a person capable of change. The trial's meaning shifts when Leafel refuses to let the capital define Theo alone. Through a newly opened mirror spell, Micah presents the people of Leafel, including Imani, Dale, Dmitri and his parents, Nib, Amaya, and Hayden, who demands the healer's release. Their intervention establishes that Theo's community knows the truth and does not respond with abandonment. It also supplies the social foundation for Malthios's later life in Leafel: freedom is not merely granted by the court but made livable by people willing to recognize the shared body as part of their community. The legal resolution preserves both responsibility and possibility. Malthios admits that he destroyed the Demon Fortress and everyone within it, while noting that a few lesser demons and demon-created monsters may remain. Luc states that the Hero's duty is to kill the Demon King, but immediately qualifies that duty by insisting that he can choose when it will happen. King Alexis ultimately announces that Malthios is sentenced to life in prison while Theo Bladefoot is free of all charges. The result is neither a simple declaration that Malthios's past has vanished nor an immediate execution: it is a constrained second chance in which his continued existence remains acknowledged and morally serious.
Release and First Flight
At the beginning of the event, Malthios stands in the doorway of the healer's cottage and looks toward the road leading to Leafel. The threshold becomes a fitting image for his condition. For the first time in thirty years, or perhaps longer, he has the freedom to do whatever he wants, yet the absence of commands leaves him frozen. The former ruler who once embodied destruction has no prepared role for a life without a throne, an army, or an enemy to conquer. Theo's voice offers the first practical form of support: he tells Malthios that he is still there and advises him to start small. Their shared-body bond therefore becomes more than a magical imprisonment. Theo's presence gives Malthios a companion with whom freedom can be practiced gradually, while Malthios must learn to make choices without converting every choice into domination. The event begins not with triumphal movement but with hesitation, followed by a modest instruction that makes movement possible. Malthios's first choice is flight. His wings flutter, and he looks up at the sky before taking off into the spring air. He has not flown without restrictions for almost a century, making the act a release from a confinement older than his current legal sentence. The flight is shared: Theo's joy mixes with Malthios's own, and their common face breaks into a grin so broad that their cheeks hurt. Below them, Leafel, its farmland, and its surrounding forest form a green and brown quilt. The image reverses the scale of Malthios's former identity. Once associated with castles, armies, and the destruction of whole strongholds, he now experiences the world from above a small village that has become home to the healer who houses him. The flight also carries grief. Malthios remembers Kamil, who used to drag him flying, and the memory produces a hollow ache. Theo's presence soothes it, functioning as a healing influence that Malthios recognizes even though Theo does not fully understand how deeply he affects others. Hunger then interrupts the expansive moment. Theo notes that humans need to eat more regularly than demons, and Malthios dives toward the village, choosing the next destination and the meal they will share. Freedom is thus grounded in bodily routine rather than reserved for grand gestures.
Entering Leafel Openly
Landing in the middle of Leafel feels strange to Malthios because his horns, wings, and tail are fully visible. The body that once signaled catastrophe is now displayed in the ordinary center of town. Passing townsfolk either wave or stare in awe, and Malthios awkwardly waves back. The gesture is small but consequential: he does not conceal himself, retreat, or demand recognition. He simply attempts to answer the attention of people who are learning how to see him. He chooses Fox Tales for a snack and enters with anxiety. When Amaya turns at the sound of the bell, Malthios briefly expects to be thrown out. He tries to hide his claws in closed fists while his tail swishes nervously behind him, revealing how little his former power protects him from the vulnerability of being a newcomer. He introduces his visit as temporary, saying that he only came for a snack and would be on his way, as though minimizing his presence might prevent rejection. Amaya answers that fear with hospitality, beaming and inviting him to sit wherever he is comfortable. Malthios chooses a corner table so his wings will not bump anyone. The welcome does not erase the awkwardness of his body or the history attached to it; instead, it gives him a safe setting in which awkwardness can remain visible without becoming grounds for expulsion. Amaya recognizes him as Mal and expresses happiness that Theo is letting him out to visit, explicitly acknowledging the challenge of two people sharing one body. Her response treats the arrangement as difficult but intelligible, not as an automatic reason for violence.
Consequences and New Life
The event changes the practical meaning of the trial's sentence. Malthios is not shown returning to a fortress or assuming a restored hierarchy. He begins with a doorway, a flight, hunger, a descent into town, and a seat in the corner of a café. These details establish a life structured by access to shared domestic and communal spaces: the healer's cottage provides the point of departure, the sky provides newly recovered mobility, and Fox Tales provides a public place where he can be welcomed as Mal. Theo remains essential to every stage of the transition. His voice steadies Malthios when freedom produces uncertainty; his joy joins the joy of flight; his human needs redirect the excursion toward food; and his reputation as Leafel's healer helps make the village's acceptance possible. At the same time, Malthios's experience cannot be reduced to Theo's. The exhilaration of flight, the ache of remembering Kamil, the anxiety over his claws and tail, and the awkward wave to the townsfolk belong to Malthios as he begins to inhabit a life that is no longer defined solely by his former title. The event therefore inaugurates a second chance rather than completing a redemption. The court's decision does not declare the destruction of the Demon Fortress irrelevant, and Malthios's life remains tied to the condition of sharing Theo's body. Yet Leafel offers a social alternative to the capital's carceral logic. The capital contains dungeons, courts, royal authority, and magical surveillance; Leafel answers with familiar roads, a healer's cottage, townspeople, and a café table. Malthios's first day of freedom shows that a changed life begins when the former Demon King can enter an ordinary room, be recognized, and remain there.
